For my nephew ~~ my autistic hero.
DEXTER

My little man
with great big blue eyes,
I wonder sometimes
if you realize

How much I love you -
I want you to know.
It makes me so happy
to watch as you grow

Into a boy
of three years already.
Time marches on,
forward and steady.

Can I protect you
from pain you will suffer?
Can I be there
when you can’t find another

One who will listen
and try to defend
Your sweet, fragile feelings
when they can’t comprehend?

The reason you seem
to act out of line,
the unseen affliction
of your precious mind.

They cannot see it.
They can’t understand.
Of intelligence they boast,
you have more in the end.

Your infectious giggle
they may not know
And they’ll never catch
the kisses you blow.

So gather up Buzz
And Dora and Woody,
Let’s jump on mom’s bed
And then watch a movie

You may not be perfect
But that doesn’t matter
You are my little buddy
I’ll love you forever
