A minority asking forgiveness to society for being different
I’m sorry I’m not American
I’m sorry English wasn’t my first language
For not being into sports
Because my parents are divorced.
For not being a girl scout
Because my mother is really poor
For not playing any sport
Or going to a summer camp
For not having blue eyes
Or being a blonde

I’m sorry for not playing the piano
Or being 1st chair flute
I’m sorry for never winning a trophy
For being ugly and not cute.

I don’t roller-skate
I don’t do lacrosse
I don’t do ballet
I wanted to
But my mom is too poor

Who would take me to practice?
I don’t have a nanny

I’m a Latina
Whose friends are not into reggaeton
I’m a Latina
Who dresses NOT in gang clothes
I’m Latina
Who loves history and français
I’m a Latina
With a father who is mestizo
With a mother who is mulatto
Who forgets how to speak español
Who’s into rock
Who wants to visit Europe
And go on walks around its blocks.

I’m a Latina whose definition of Latino is controversial
Because I don’t fit in a single group
But belong to many, yet none
I’m a Latina who is not Latino
I’m just a girl who wants to see the world.
