Story in poem of love, never fulfilled

"My Darling heart song, I've been gone so long..
Now I've rushed to you without delay..
I do not understand, won't you give me your hand?
Tell me, Sweet..why do you turn way?"

"Then you cannot have heard, though I tried to send word..
While you fought in a land far away
The king forced my hand, to wed another man
and in this I had no say."

Shock, grief and dismay, these emotions did play..
across her beloved Knights face..
For her sake he stayed calm, as he kissed her palm
and she wept as she heard him say...

"You're the love of my life, I'll not take another as wife..
for my heart belongs only to you...
You have given your word, and your King you must serve,
and to your new husband be true."

Their love unrequited, never to be united..
She raced up the stairs in despair..
She had broken his heart, and the Knight for his part..
Lived the rest of his life without care.

His heart became hard, and o'er years battle scarred..
and when his time finally came..
Twas at the hands of a foe, a swift fatal blow..
and with his last breath he cried out her name..
