This small piece was taken from a creative writing prompt.
They had nothing to say each other. After twenty years of marriage something had gone horribly wrong. What happened? Neither one of them knew. They just sat there at the restaurant table looking at anything but each other.

All around them was the hustle and bustle of a busy noon time lunch. Waiters and waitresses took orders and handed out daily specials to hungry customers. At all the other tables was the hum of quiet conversations, but at their table was nothing but an uncomfortable silence.

As they sat there eating their lunches both were wrapped up in their own thoughts. Thoughts of doubt and fear. Thoughts of shame and recrimination. They were so self-involved that neither one saw the pain and sorrow passing across each others faces.
