THE GIRL WITH AUBURN HAIR.

She had laced her bodice with special care,
And neatly coiled her auburn hair.
The mirror reflected such a pleasing sight,
She trembled at the thought of a memorable night.

She twirled and skipped around the room,
Practising dance steps that she would soon
Be performing in the arms of her handsome beau.
How much she loved him: only she could know.

The hours passed with no sign of her date,
What possibly had happened to make him so late.
No call, no message to explain the delay,
And still she waited, till the break of day.

The news that her loved one had now found another,
Was sadly conveyed by her comforting mother.
But no words of comfort could ease any pain
For she felt at this moment, she could not love again.

No more will she ever be so beautifully clothed,
No more will she dance with her handsome betrothed.
The mirror reflected such a heartbroken sight,
As she uncoiled her hair and turned out the light.
