Poem expressing a strange feeling I got visiting some old friends.
Feeling Familiarity

Familiarity, warm and soothing

Yet somehow disturbing, too.

A warm breeze, a sunny sky–

But a cold chill blew.

Tears well without warning

As though there were no cause.

Only a faint memory of a distant feeling

Somehow gives me pause.

The sky is warm and the building well kept,

Flowering plants rest pleasantly, almost inviting.

The door is not welcoming–but why?

A vague remembrance I’m fighting.

The door opens easily to familiarity and friends.

And yet my breath is pressed out under some great unseen stone.

The good outweighs the bad they say,

But I somehow feel alone.

Why do I want so much to find

Things were not quite as bad for so long?

Why do I wish that all is now well–

And only my perspective was wrong?

Familiarity warm and cold.

Clear and ghostly, not quite real.

Familiarity strong and not quite welcome.

After all, it is only how I feel.
