a quilt stitched to remember the Holocaust
Book of Esther II

With patchwork scraps of calico
and snippets of unused lace
she stitched memories of the Holocaust
into quilts of transcendant grace.

As in the Book of Esther
we cannot read G-d's name
but His hand on all creation
is revealed to us the same.

Barley fields and cabbages,
ashes, rifles, and blood
rendered in stark simplicity,
witness to faith and love.

When in the valley of the shadow
in deep darkness and despair
I will huddle in the quilts of Esther
and know that G-d hears prayer.

Author's note: Esther of the Bible saved her people with courage and truth. Esther Nisenthal Krinitz also survived and recorded her memories in a series of quilts.
