Entry for the "Amazing 55 Word Story Contest."
He gasps and cries out. His body is racked by excruciating pain. Why him? Why couldn't it have happened to... someone else? But he sees a lifeless baby lying facedown in the dirt nearby and immediately realizes his selfishness. Better to have loved and lost than not at all. So he lets death take him.
