a poem to the muses
Dear heavenly muses!
I praise thee for thy great works.
Thy hands brush those great souls
That inspire us to work on our own scrolls.

Each of thy voices are heard throughout the ages.
In song, in poetry, in drama.
Inspiration is thy job
And thy lovely faces do not sob.

Calliope, the eldest of thy sisters,
Are fair voiced as well as fair skinned.
With writing tablet in hand and crowned in gold,
Muse of Epic Poetry, great stories are told.

Clio, the proclaimer, thy are unafraid!
Thy chest is filled with books
That help thy subject learn
Muse of History, you keep the cities from being burned.

Erato, the Lovely, as thy friends say,
A lyre stays in thy hands
As a crown of roses lay on thy head.
Muse of Love Poetry and Mimicry,
the song that thy writes will never be dead.

Euterpe, the Giver of Pleasure,
Thy songs are sweet
Thy flute sings notes sometimes unheard.
Muse of Music, thy voice has never erred.

Melpomene, the songstress,
Weave thy magic through drama
With thy props of mask, sword, and garland,
Muse of Tragedy, thy cries are heard in every man.

Polymnia, thy art of many hymns.
Bring thy people mime and meditation.
A cross you do bear, for
Muse of Sacred Poetry, thy word is most shared.

Terpsichore, the whirlee one,
Thy lyre plays a tune so light.
Thy dresses flow around
Muse of Dancing, thy feet hardly touch the ground.

Thalia, a flourishing flower,
Thy comedy brings laughter to thy people.
With thy comic mask and crown of ivy
Music of Comedy and Playful Poetry,
who knows what thy angle may be.

Urania, the best for last and most heavenly child.
Thy staff points to those heavenly bodies along
         the darkened sky
With extensive knowledge
Muse of Astronomy and Astrology,
thy hands guide our eyes to the edge.

I prithee, please
Continue to inspire my life
As well as my work
Both written and non so I may continue to smirk

And say how much thine voices have helped me.
Without inspiration, this world would be a dull place!
Dear beings of song and might
Muses of Inspiration you bring us the light.
