This short poem is a change to Maya Angelou's "Phenomenal Woman" poem.
Phenomenal Athlete

Often players doubt me when they see my size.
I’m not the perfect athlete they picture in their eyes.
When it’s all said and done, though,
It’s not the outcome they surmised.
I prove,
My energy’s unyielding
My strength’s well at hand,
I focus on the ending goal,
With determination, strong, I stand.
I’m an athlete
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal athlete,
Yes, that’s me.

I view the foes around me
Teammates by me side,
We forge ahead,
In silence
Ready for the ride.
Chaos swarms around me,
There’s no place I’d rather be.
I prove,
Taking on each challenge,
Accepting and with ease,
There’s not a single soul,
I don’t try to please.
I’m an athlete
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal athlete,
Yes, that’s me.

Coaches often wonder
Just how I came to be.
They see my height
An obstacle
But my true desire guides me.
They struggle with the concept
How the impossible has come to be.
I prove,
With agility and precision,
Fast reflexes at my side,
I focus on the end result,
In each and every stride.
I’m an athlete
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal athlete,
Yes, that’s me.

It’s obvious to see
Potential lies within.
I don’t have to brag or boast
It’s not popularity I need to win.
Those only out for glory
Strive only towards sin.
I prove,
It’s the attitude I take,
But not the path that I chose,
Both ways I reach the finish line,
Whether I win or lose.
‘Because I’m an athlete
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal athlete,
Yes, that’s me.
