A Broken Heart

How can you truly love with a broken heart and a distant soul?
Pick up the pieces of the shattered essence of your life
Pieces from every part of your past that got ripped out in haste,
Never to be put back in its place

A heart so fragile, it’s hanging by a mere thread
Or a string or maybe just a lonely piece
To keep it at least beating, ever so slowly
But with enough life to get through the encompassing darkness

Put up a wall, of bricks and mortar
Keep the pieces out and that lonely shard in,
What would happen if you gave up the last piece?
That small shard that sustains you

To give it away, you would be left with nothing
A gaping hole in your chest
Until the rest of the pieces were gathered and restored
To restore a broken heart, is that possible?

Locate all the pieces that you ever gave away
Or stolen away or just got thrown away
At one point, you heart was whole
All the pieces fit into place

The hurt, the pain, the misery
With each tear, each broken dream
A piece fell away
Until it was empty, a broken void

Never stopping to search for the pieces
Instead, going along with your life
Leaving your heart bleeding and trampled upon
Thinking you would be able to love again

There comes a point though
If you don’t stop and pick up the fragments
Your heart may never be whole again
And never to feel again

Reminisce down your memory lane
Searching the hurt again
Reliving the pain again
Feeling the angst to recover the pieces

Take them back from those who are undeserving
Untangle your memory from the torture
Take them back, piece by piece
Restore your broken heart

It won’t be perfect, but it will be whole
Never again the same, but beating again
With hope, passion, fear
And the will to live again

That one lonely shard that stands as the final piece
Will again be reunited with its brethren
When is up to you
But it must be done to heal
