A Mother's Poem to her grown son
A Mother's Lesson

As tears well up inside my eyes,
I think of what my son said to me tonight.
Mom, you always tell me negative things,
He said with anguish in his warm heart.
I said Son; it's only that I love you so;
I want no harm to come to you.
As I tried to help him, the dangers to see,
I caused him some pain; unforeseen.
What he perceives as my slights,
I see as my personal insights;
A way for me to help him think through;
As always, just a way of loving him too.

I guess it's hard to cease being the "mommy" in me.
Ever wanting to hold your hand as you cross the street.
And surely I know, that you're all grown,
Able to decide for yourself and on your own.
Sometimes I forget in my mother's heart,
you just want to share; wanting me to see your gait.
To share in you and the joys of your heart;
Wanting me know each new step that you take.
You're proud of yourself and want me to know.
I will do my best to step back and watch you grow.

I promise to love you in ways you need me to do.
I will try to keep mind; that there's no need
For me to kiss your skinned knee,
bundle you up and remind you of things.
I promise to let you stumble, or fall if you must.
And only if you ask; I will brush off the dust.
I am always your Mom, ever loving and such.
But I will strive not to be "mommy" quite so much.
Please never stop sharing all the things that you do.
I will keep my ears open and my heart open too.
I will try to not advise unless you ask for it.
For the love between mother and son is God's gift.
