I wrote this poem for a friend upon the unexpected death of his 14 year old child.
A FATHER’S PRAYER

Dear Father, who art in heaven, oh hallowed be Thy name,
agony doth fill my heart, please take away this pain.

Humbly, I beseech Thee God, give answer to my prayer.
‘Tis comfort for my soul I seek, and for my child, Thy tender loving care.

Today, dear Lord, I held her silent figure within my aching arms.
I wish I could have saved her Lord and kept her safe from harm.

I hold her gently to my breast, my babe of tender years.
My soul cries out with sorrow as I whisper in her ear,
“Please don’t leave my precious one,” my eyes wet with anguished tears.

The ache within my heart dear God, ’tis far more than I can bear.
To hold her in my arms once more, to take away her cares.
Please tell her that I love her, Lord, and shall someday meet her there.

Once again I ask Thee, please help me understand,
Give comfort God where none exists, where only pain abounds.

Yet even as I ask Thee Lord, I am still unsure
Will I ever truly find the peace that I am asking for?

Yet, I shall ask Thee anyway...please free me from my grief
Stop this pain and torment, oh help me find relief.

She was a loving child God, special from her birth
She made my life much brighter on this place that we call earth

Yet when her time within this life came to a sudden end
The real trial of my life, did just this night begin.

Even though her love and joy, before this time I’d shared
The pain her loss has given me, always will be there

I loved her so as I tried a worthy Dad to be,
yet the outcome of her life cut short, I did not foresee.

So now with prayer upon my lips, an ache deep within my soul
Why Thou called her home, dear Lord, I may never know

“Why couldn’t it be different?” with all my soul I shout!
Yet the love Thou hast for all Thy children, has never been in doubt

There is just one more thing, oh God, which I will ask of Thee,
Hold her in thy hollowed arms and tell her that I love her Lord,
and kiss her one more time for me.
