Pale Eyes - Poem & Prose

Pale Eyes
{The Poem}

She lies here cold and lifeless
Within a moment embracing the dark
The worst part of fear is finding out it's real
Truth inside pale eyes
Put in place
Tucked away neatly with the memories I keep
Her broken wing shivers
Fractured by existence
Unable to concede ego
Self hate finds a bitter end
Eulogized in my heart
Etched in my mind
She wants to live not just survive
Perched on my branch
An ornament to view
This is mine forever
The truth inside pale eyes

Pale Eyes
{The Prose}

"I wanna live not just survive."
That's the last thing I heard before the phone hit the floor.
Was this really a cry for help?
Does the monotony of self hate taste less bitter
when it flows from sweet lips?

"She overdosed last night."
I wake to the call in the morning, her mother was hysterical.
"What did I do to make this happen," she asks.
Funny? I was wondering that as well, though I don't say it.

Meghan was a good girl, but even good girls can't chase a bottle
of advil with a bottle of vodka and live to tell about it.
If only I had known the darkness hidden behind pale eyes.
Who could know?

Now there is only empty here.
This is where she lay dying, wringing her insides out.
To escape some fear that was given too much thought.
I only have blame but it's not my own.

There was some hidden truth behind pale eyes.
If only a fleeting truth.
If only a lie.
She wants to live not just survive.
