Tribute to summer
Summer

Our spring fever turns now to lazy summer;
longest nights are swapped for longest days.
A Woodpecker taps like a distant drummer,
keeping broken rhyme with screeching jays.

Umbrellas are employed for shade, not rain,
as half-naked bodies cover crowded beaches.
Blankets ripped from their bedroom domain
are tossed for picnics at the grassiest reaches.

A time for golf, baseball, and afternoon naps.
Fishing from a chair, over there, in the shade,
casting lines with no bait, so what?  Just relax
and teach our kids the games we once played.
