We lived together—
breathed the same air—
stomped on the same ground—

We rhymed in body,
leg, and seat—in back
and forth, and up and down—

We quickened to the same
distractions, jumped at the
same sights and sounds—

I held your leg, your tail,
your head and with your spirit
this human friend you found—

It’s only fitting that we
should share death, as we had
shared life, on the same ground.
