The cycle of drowning again and again
Drowning.
I feel myself falling.
Losing gravity, floating,
drifting towards the abyss.
Weightless, yet powerful.
Relaxed, flowing with every pull,
every tug of the current,
every draw of the tide.
Tumbling and twisting,
out of control.
Aware of the flow,
privy to it's course.
Somehow feeling invincible.
Out of its deadly grip.
Until the depth sets in,
it's pressure recognized.
I see my reflection fading,
the light grows dim.
I hold my breath,
hoping for quick release.
There is no such thing.
It's too late now.
Even if you let loose,
the damage has already sunk in.
The focus is now survival,
you will not have the best of me.
But the pull is so familiar.
The draw so intoxicating.
I take a breath.
To defeat you by giving in.
To prove you wrong for all to see,
all to know you couldn't conquer.
But it's no secret that I will suffocate.
Once and again,
you win.
Different water,
same end.
