Wild eyed and wild, with wicked ways.......

Winter's Waif.

Wide eyed and wild with wicked ways,
Proclaimer of fierce winter days.
He rides the wind that brings the storm
To shrive the soul and freeze the form.
This winter waif will hold on tight;
He'll not give up without a fight.

But then, the harbingers of spring
Begin to warble and to sing
And in the hedgerow and the lane
Flowers nurtured by April's rain,
Spring daffodil and crocus bright;
Dark day gives way to summer light.

New life evolves across the earth,
Time for renewal, for rebirth.
Then as the warm and gentle breeze
Sighs softly through the willow trees
The summer sunshine, bright and bold,
Turns this green land to autumn's gold.

The harvest is all gathered now;
The empty land awaits the plough.
The autumn evenings shorter grow
As we prepare for ice and snow.
Too well we know, after the rain-
The waif of winter comes again.
