How ignorant and unfeeling we can be from time to time
I am an immigrant to your country,I feel newly born,
This place to me is paradise after my long sojourn.
With war and with poverty and a dictator on my back,
So I came across the water,my clothes in one sack.

I'm prepared to work real hard for just a little pay,
Quickly learning your tongue and what you do your way.
I'm grateful to this place and most of the people within,
It's good to see my children grow fat, who once were always thin.

I'm appreciative of education, a home, the chance to succeed,
A time to really live and not a life based on need.
Yet, in some eyes,I see that i'm not welcome here,
Why so angry, so ignorant, so driven by your fear.

If you had walked within my shoes, had witnessed all I'd seen,
You'd understand what I'd endured and why I was so keen.
To come here to begin again, to start my life anew,
I'm not after an easy ride, I don't want to take from you.

Just the chance to live safely and to look after my kin,
To prosper in this country we find ourselves within.
