What it feels like to be lonely
SQUARE PEG IN A ROUND HOLE

What is becoming of this thing I call my life?
Day to day I give and do and be and give some more.
I receive ten-fold in blessings and karma.
But there’s an empty place, a space –
a round black hole, a void.
Even receiving in excess of one hundred fold
won’t fill the emptiness.
I tried a square peg,
it wouldn’t fit in the round hole.
I knew it wouldn’t fit but I tried anyway,
it was the only peg around.
Why not, one more try.
Try harder!
Still, the sharp edges don’t fit the curved diameter of the round hole.

Where are the curved pegs that just might fit?
Are they sold out? Broken?
Pretending it is round does not make it round.
The round hole cannot be shaped any other way,
and neither can all the sharp-cornered pegs.
The square pegs will never, ever fit.

Round pegs are obsolete it seems,
extinct,
non-existent.
This void must be filled before it collapses in on itself.

I hear the shape of Love is a perfect match,
a safe snug secure fit.
The smooth curved edges of the round peg fit perfectly flush
with the soft round diameter of my space –
Where do I find it, Love?
Love will mean
I’m no longer empty.
