the realization that life and love are not always what we expect.
She reads her favorite books to me,

But all I hear are the words.

I can tell you what it's like

To be a simple man,

But not what it's like to be hers.

When she sees roses,

I only see thorns.

When she said "Love,...

We can compromise",

I thought "Love,...

I'm not so sure."

She quotes her favorite authors

With hopes that I'll understand.

She dreams of big city lights,

Her name up on Broadway.

I dream of summer's heat,

And long, dusty roads.

When she sees paintings,

I only see the pain.

When she said "Love,...

We can make it true",

I thought "Love,...

I'm broken through."

I look into her eyes and realize,

Each breath I take,

I'm closer to dying.

Each time she touches me,

The feeling is gone

Just as quickly

As she moves her hand.

We're just waisting time

Watching day fade,

Sand flee the hourglass.

Seasons form...and love go.

As the color of life

Turns to gray.
