STOLEN HERITAGE

A legacy lost in the pages of time,
a stolen heritage that should be mine.
Nothing written down, dates or names,
Bits and pieces are all that remains.
A pity that is.

I started to climb up the old family tree,
the ghosts of ancestors I hoped to see.
In searching for who begat and became,
I found quite often a change in the name.

Many a brick wall brought me up short,
my heritage, at times, I've had to abort.
Parents, grandparents and next of kin -
chances of finding them all seemed slim.

Circumstances must have played a part
as some moved on to make a new start.
Shorten the name or change it for good,
goodbye to the past, and for all it stood.

I wondered how they lived in years past
and what they thought would always last.
Who were these people now lost to me?
I'm searching for answers, hoping to see.

A legacy lost in the pages of time,
a stolen heritage that should be mine.
Nothing written down, dates or names,
Bits and pieces are all that remains.
A pity that is.
