a sonnet of disillusionment - Winner Round 52 Jan 2010 POETRY IN RHYME - RHYTHM CONTEST

Upon the water’s edge we danced freely
Young and gay, with red flowers in our hair.
Back in the days when I loved completely,
Not knowing enough of you to despair,
You blew kisses upon my open palm.
I swayed beneath the spell you wove for us
Surrendering myself without a qualm
To blood red flowers and unbridled lust.
Clearly you were far above my station;
Such easy yielding was a most funny,
Foolish, and naive capitulation
To a liar’s words of milk and honey.
We danced, we kissed, I tumbled into love;
Such feeling you were incapable of.
