Two boys are found in a forest in the small city of Winter Crest.
Prologue

I have to keep running, my heart is thudding against my chest. I don't remember why I'm running or what I'm running from. A younger boy is running behind me. I don't remember who he is but I get the feeling that I know him from somewhere. I can't remember my name, something is blocking my memories.
Some impulse in my body makes me stop and wait for the boy.
He huffs and pants.
"Want slow down," the little boy says and sits on the ground.
I don't know how we ended up here. We're in a big forest, all around us I see trees. All the trees have no leaves, their branches are bare. It must be winter. There's no snow. The ground is bare with very little grass. The cold air tells me that also that it is winter.
"Who are you?" I ask the little boy, but all I succeed in doing is making him cry.
"No remember! No remember!" He bawls.
I can't make any sense of what he's saying. I don't know if he's upset because I can't remember him or because he doesn't know his name.
"Big bro!" he yells and points at me. He rubs his wet eyes and crawls over to me. He clings to my leg.
He's not much smaller than me, so he almost pushes me over when he grabs me.

He's my brother?
"What's my name?" I ask my brother.
He smiles and cries "Big bro!"
How come I can't remember? Why am I so scared? Is a monster coming after us? Where are my mummy and daddy?
All these thoughts entered my mind. I don't know if I have a mum or dad. A sudden noise makes my heart jolt with fear again. I hold my brother in my arms for reasurance. I am a kid too, I'm as scared as he is. We did what two kids would if they were lost. We started to cry for mum and dad.
"Mummy!" I cry.
"Daddy!" My little brother cries.
Tears stream down our faces, after a long time of crying and screaming my throat is hurting and my eyes are stinging.
"I thirsty. I thirsty" he cries.
We need to find water.
I take his hand and look around for water. It must have been raining some time ago because puddles are everywhere.

We quench our thirst by drinking the rain water. We spit it out the first time it enters our mouths. I'm too thirsty to complain so I cup my hands and drink. My brother claps his hands and copies me. His face scrunches up as he swallows the water.
"Blech," we both say sticking our tongues out. The water was bad. My brother doesn't talk much, I don't know if he's always been that way. Suddenly I feel very sleepy. I realise that my brother is already sleeping in some grass. I pull myself over to him and lay beside him. It's getting dark and cold now. Grey clouds cover the sky. The sky begins to growl. I wonder if it's mad at us. I shudder at my thoughts, things are already bad enough without an angry sky. Then the sky begins to cry. It's sad. The pouring rain begins to come down really fast. It's not long before we're soaked. My brother wakes up crying.
"Cold! Cold!" he bawls.
We dash for the trees, though I get under the trees first because I'm a little older than him. The trees provide little shelter and my wet clothes are making me shiver. My skin begins to hurt because of the cold. I begin to worry that we might die. There's no food and no tasty water. Mummy and daddy are lost somewhere! Or we don't have any......

Salty tears stream down my face. They're warm on my face and make me feel a little better. My brother is mumbling something but I can't hear him through the rain. I bend down so I can hear him better.
"Monster coming. Monster coming," he repeats.

The rain didn't last long but the cold did. My body has been shivering non stop. My little brother isn't any better. His face is very hot. I think he might be sick but I'm not sure. If he's sick then we need to find a way out of here fast. His face is damp with sweat. I don't know what to do. I don't want him to die.
"Somebody help!" I scream.
"Help us. Please help......" I croak.
My body feels heavy, I fall on the hard leaf covered ground and black out.

Winter Crest News

Tuesday 5th December 1996

Two young boys were found in Winter Crest woods yesterday night. Police say that they don't know how the boys got there.
It is suspected that they were both abandoned by their parents. The identity of both boys is unknown. Both of them are belived to be around six and three. No one is sure exactly how old the oldest boy is , he appears to be six years old but he's a small boy. "The boys are lucky to be alive," a local named Betty green commented. She was nearby when she heard crying coming from the forest. She was walking her dog when she found the boys. Both boys are believed to be brothers, though it is not clear.
