A girl who loses her hair to cancer gets creative...
Carolina’s Curls

The day Carolina’s Hair came off, she yelled “FINE!”
“Take my hair! I don’t need it anyway. I can always wear a hat!”
And she did.
And it was homemade.
She walked into school the very next day wearing the hat that defined all hats.
It had green plumes protruding from magenta felt, and there were many very large
multi-colored gems all over it.
“Carolina! What happened to your curls?” said the kids at recess.
“Who needs curls when you can have this!” answered Carolina , pointing to her
prominent hat.
“Wow! That is one fantastic hat!” said Miss Dunphy, the Art Teacher, “I wish I could
have a hat like that!”
“Well, all it takes is a little felt, some feathers, and some plastic gems…”Carolina
suggested.
And then it started.
“TO THE ART ROOM!” Yelled Miss Dunphy, “We will ALL wear fine hats today!”
It was a riot of colour, a selection of styles, and a clear case of compromise, but by the
end of art class, everyone was sporting a prominent hat of their own.
And then the parade began. In a feathery, sparkling, streak of colours, Carolina and her classmates strutted their stuff all the way down the hallway and out into the schoolyard.
After the parade of hats, everyone gathered around Carolina and thanked her for her
inspiration.
“What gave you the idea for Hat Day?” asked the children.
“Well,” said Carolina, “Cancer took my hair away, but not my imagination.”
