The emotions of a drum major and a marching band in their first performance ever.
Drum Major

The silent whispers of the band,
Taking that final step from the stands.

My Heart is pounding with each step,
I try to think but I forget…
all is a memory that has been lost.
Knees shaking, arms at my side…
I swear it’s possible I might die.

Drum Major is you band ready?
The voice begins.
I perform my salute and
The crowd erupts with applause.
But now the real test begins as they begin to march on the field.

Can I keep them in time?
Can I keep them in step?
I start to shake and my hands begin to drop.
But their faces make me stop.

The look of hope, the look of pride.
They’re all in perfect stride.
I regain my strength and finally smile.
For I have not lost myself in denial.
The show is over and now I step.
Down to my band,
Who kept me alive, who kept me in check.
We grasp one another and yell out our thanks.
For we have survived our first marching show.
But now we must stay calm lest we forget that marching season isn’t over yet.
