new beginnings, same plot line
This time, the hard part comes last
Goodbyes have been said
But a sense of farewell still lingers
Presumptuous good intentions misaligned by bad timing

Summer sleepers have now gone to bed
Fall silently ushering revelers to the door
Swinging shut on the last vestige of might-have-been
Hands last clasp of the season, the barest of embraces

While cherubs pack away their halos, hiding yawns behind child-sized fists
Tiny devils snuggle together to ward off dreams
Of moments gone too soon
Candles flickering around them, because even they fear the stillness of night

Not even the stars are talking
Their celestial chatter cut short by the Moons imposing presence
Spoken promises silenced by the weight of words unsaid
I’ll miss you

And while everyone and everything is finding respite by moonlight
Conscious thoughts will twist lifeless bed sheets
Giving new design to the art of insomnia
Somber colors splashed liberally across mind-scape, drawing old ideas to a close

All the glances cast over shoulders will show
The parkway signs and their exit ramps
Highway miles and millions of white lines
And one extremely blue sky—the mood of departure

Waves crashing on the sand will erode the footprints left behind
But fond memories will gently be carried by winds caress
Stroking cheeks that fingertips and lips once touched
Rekindling the blaze of summer skies

The cloak of Fall is settling around our shoulders
Crisp from its yearlong storage
But one thought settles the ripples in my mind
We’ve only just met…
