Simple, slightly silly, poem with a not so hidden message
Once upon a time
There was a dragon of mine.
His name was Kalamazoo;
And he was pink and purple too.
It was in a cave he dwelt
And for other people he felt.
For he was a caring dragon, this one
And he loved to have fun.

But sitting in his cave surrounded by stone,
Kalamazoo felt very alone.
It was then that he realized,
Much to his surprise,
That he didn't like this feeling he had
The only way to describe it was bad.
Because while fun loving he was,
Fun all by himself was not truly fun.

Kalamazoo could not believe his naïveté
To think himself other than what he was meant to be.
A slave for all eternity-
To the whims of fate and society.
This was not something he could accept-
To be no better than the rest.

He knew now-he could see
It was time for him to be free.
So with a roar at the sky,
Kalamazoo unfurled his wings and began to fly.
And over the village he did soar
-A slave no more-
A beacon of light and hope
To those on the ground below.

Just the other day he and I had tea.
He regaled me with tales of all the wonders that he did see.
He told me of the new people he did meet
And of many amazing feats.
I asked him how he saw himself now that he was free
He said "unique" was what he was and what everyone could be.

It is now that I shall admit to my lie-
Kalamazoo was never my pet.
Only my friend-true as true can be
For how can I own someone who is so free
And uniquely his own to be.
