Inspired by a trip to an old off the map ranch in Mexico.

Rancho Mornings

I’ve been to the other side of me,
where the cock is a clock.

A call to the rancho macho men,
who have drinking and planting
to do.

By the time to cock crows two,
the women have their brooms
in hand, sweeping the hard-packed
streets of dirt.

The cock crows three,
as pebbles rumble on the shaking
Earth, under a village herd of cows,
horses, pigs, and goats.

The animals make their way down
to the river crossing.  Followed
by the rancho macho men.

The men have bottles of home grown
Tequila sticking out their raggedy
Back pant pockets.
