A poem of discovery.
What I am looking for
cannot be contained by words,
wrapped up in any expression,
or conveyed by a single emotion.

Because what I am looking for
is beyond what humans are now capable of.
It is something of which we once,
some time ago,
held within our hearts,
but have since lost
and can never reclaim.

This thing, so stupid for its simplicity,
is gone from our sights,
fled from the dimensions to which we cling
and made a new home in the obscurity of doubt.

But it is something that we can sense all the same,
close our eyes and drift towards its direction
and follow the phantom path it has left behind.

And while I will never find it,
never grasp it within my hands,
or see it standing on the horizon,
I know that in the wake of its desertion
It has left us a parting message,
written in the chill breeze of an autumn’s eve,
that no matter what we may find along the way,
nothing will ever compare
to the feeling of majesty we find
whenever we should set foot into the unknown
and discover what we have never known before.
