A poem about hunting a deer.

In the stand,
Elevated, high above land,
I sat at the ready.
My gaze ahead, perfectly steady.

Hour after hour, seemed to crawl by,
But I remained determined and spry.
The day’s stillness becoming ever austere,
When suddenly, A sound leapt into my ear.

The noise of snapping twigs saturated the air.
My eyes scanned around with a narrowing stare,
As the mighty creature moved within range.
My rifle restlessly awaiting the exchange.

I drew in a slow, deep, purposeful breath,
In preparation for the imminent death.
Looking through the scope, I steadied the shot,
Taking aim to make sure it was the appropriate spot.

Fire! Death jumped from my gun.
Penetrating the pulsating, blood pumping organ.
It immediately collapsed into a heap on the ground,
From it, there came not a single sound.

It gave the ultimate price.
And I honored the great animal’s sacrifice,
This magnificent beast,
For providing my family with a much needed feast.
