Written for poetry contest on site. When a smile means something else
When the lady smiles
A dimple dances on her cheek.
But doesn’t reach her eyes.
Behind the look of joy
Is the feeling of desperation.
Though the smile lights her face
Her heart is in deep despair
And no one sees the difference.
Handing out comfort to others
She keeps none for herself.
With that smile
She begs for solace
This is not forthcoming.
Her eyes glisten
With unshed tears
That appear to be delight
Or love, or adoration
To those looking in from
The outside.
If one looked closer,
Her despondency is clear.
When the lady smiles
Its false and she knows it
But because she’s smiling
The pain goes unnoticed.
But not unfelt.
