A poem on the struggle between holding on and letting go of a gripping love & addiction.
Break Free

Break free
Addicted to chaos
Stripped of all my inner peace
Chemicals consume all the darkness inside
Time eats away at my spirit
Drowning in emotions I’ve laid aside
Wishing, hoping, for the light to shine
Missing the brightness of the light that once was
Chasing a high that can never be attained
Settling for a cheap buzz

There’s a dim light in a dark, damp room
A room that was once so bright, cheerful
And full of life
What happened here?
Day by day it seems as if nothing changes
But looking back, nearly everything is different

The flowers aren’t so vibrant
I can barely hear the music
The ticking clock replaces words
Feelings are dull and unwelcome
but numbness? No.
Quite the opposite
Pain grows deeper every day
Rooted within me, where there once was a rose
Never-ending promises of spring
I hold on for a new blossom

In the distance- a hidden field of flowers
A bright cluster of stars
Shine through a pitch, black sky
I wonder if I should gaze at these stars forever
As I always have
Or wander off to find the scent that pulls me in
The wind whispers softly through the breeze
Break free
