A poem I wrote for my ferret, Sienna, who passed away on August 26th 2010.
My how things change

From the start to the end

When we didn't start out

As the best of friends

Found chased by a cat

But bred in a shed

One would have thought

You'd have long since been dead

But a fighter you were

So small and so fierce

Wanting life with a vengeance

My heart you did pierce

Hormonal and moody

We started off wrong

You bit and you scratched

But it didn’t last long

Your place you did find

With friends made for life

Through thick and through thin

Through all of life’s strife

When life sold you short

You’d dance and you’d play

Enjoying the moments

Living life day to day

Over the years

You mellowed and calmed

From fighter to lover

You captured and charmed

A biter, a digger

An eater of toys

You loved a good cuddle

And not just from the boys

From brown as a baby

To my little silver girl

You grew and you aged

In one big jumbled swirl

I shouldn’t play favourites

But my favourite you were

With your little white mittens

And silverback fur

A lifetime of love

Did you give and demand

Right up to the end

When you died in my hands

Now gone to your rest

Beyond life as it was

Without age, pain or hurt

But not without love
