He hid behind a lilac bush . . .
A unicorn was newly born
beside a fence in May.
He hid behind a lilac bush
that bloomed a bright display.

As purple flowered shrubbery
lost petals all around,
the weanling wobbled spindly legs
like wheat on wintry ground.

The tiny horn upon his head
shone brilliant in the sun.
A mother veiled the beacon's glare;
a grooming had begun.

She licked a face that turned away
to wander without fear.
The neighing sounds went round and round
to draw her baby near.

The young one lifted weakly wings
then flapped with all his might;
he buzzed about just like a bee
but barely took to flight.

A pegasus seen high above
dove sharply from the sky,
to see the little unicorn
who sparkled in his eye.

The pegasus then flew away
with wings of winter white;
he landed on a distant slope,
stood guard all through the night.

The wingless mate called to her colt
as clouds were turning gray.
With wary eyes she watched him sleep -
they'd try another day.
