Being Dominican, I've been treated as if I'm less of an American. I have dreams too.
The American dream
The illusion that you can make it big-
That everybody can make it big-
And it’s not so hard

But let’s be realistic
There are people who try and try
To do something with themselves.
And we all have equal rights
But sometimes you won’t get the job because of the color of your skin.

And what’s so different between my skin
And your skin
And the skin of the person you bully every day?

Yours is a shade lighter than mine
But mine is a hell of a lot tougher.

I’m not white and privileged
But I’m still American
And I still dream
And I still work damn hard to make my illusions reality.
