A Quatern: I lay staring at the ceiling
I lay staring at the ceiling,
I listen to the howling wind,
I listen to the groaning house,
I listen to a faucet drip.

As I listen for the alarm,
I lay staring at the ceiling,
I wonder if this is a dream,
I wait for the first light of day.

Another long night without sleep,
Listening to my weary mind,
I lay staring at the ceiling,
Waiting for morning's arrival.

As I stare into the darkness,
I close my eyes, pretend to sleep
But my eyes will not remain shut,
I lay staring at the ceiling.

Form: A quatern has four stanzas with four lines each. Each line has eight syllables and each stanza contains a refrain. There is no required rhyme.
