Have you ever watched someone hold themselves down, hold to the past?

If you are who you are,
    And not just playing games,
      The more distressed am I,
    To see your lifelong chains,
        Trailing to the ground,
      And spread out behind you,
        Following you 'round,
To wrap and trip and bind you.

        The hateful, happy sounds,
      Of cold, clanking, scraping steel,
          Permeate around you,
        Pollution of the air,
          Most dreadful, and vile,
        Intent on the rape,
          And violation of my ear.

The chains have kept you tethered,
      Held close, as if dear,
But all that you are bound to,
        Are your deepest, darkest fears,
          And your wrenching memories,
        Of too many hopeless nights,
          With too many heartfelt tears,

          All the pain you've suffered,
          All the times you've fought
        To rid yourself from chains,
        And thought all your struggles,
        Were hopeless, and in vain,
And thought you'd never see freedom,
        You'd never know peace,

But you never thought to look,
At how YOU hold to your chains,
            Never were you shackled,
You have no need of keys,
            Just open your hands,
          And you will be released,

            Let the chains fall,
          Leave them where they lie,
            Let the links,
          Rust, and break, and die,
            Soon they will be nothing,
          Lost,
                To Evil Times...
