Prayers of the Brave Dead

The creatures were leisurely settling down for the evening
As the sun slowly descended past the horizon.
In the willow trees, birds returned to their young
And at the creek, wild animals got their last drink of the day.
A murky fog gently drifted down the mountain
To cover a field where a battled ensued years ago.
Headstones remained at attention in the moonlight
With names of patriots and foes
The spirits sluggishly clawed their way out of the ground
As their images showed the strife that their last day beheld.
But the summons of destiny had to be ultimately obeyed.
Young and old groaned or cried for the future warriors.
Some heroes fell on their knees to pray
That other families will be spared future tragedy
In a world where the effort of peace did not succeed.
