A redaction/blackout poem about the military, drawn from the Declaration of Independence.
POET'S NOTE: This is a redaction poem/blackout poem created from the full text of the Declaration of Independence.

all men,
         endowed with life, liberty,
                   and the pursuit of happiness.

deriving from destructive ends,
it is the right of the people
to effect their safety and happiness

mankind are more disposed to suffer.
         it is their right,
                   it is their duty,
                             to provide new guards
                                       for their future security.

wholesome and necessary
         for the public good,
                   immediate and pressing importance.

places unusual,
                   uncomfortable,
                             and distant.

returned to the people at large.
         exposed to invasion from without,
                             and convulsions within.

among us,
standing armies render the military superior.
                   transporting us beyond seas,
                             declaring power
                                       and waging war

armies of foreign mercenaries
compleat [sic] the works of death,
                   desolation,
                             and tyranny.

our fellow citizens become executioners

the known rule of warfare
         is undistinguished destruction

in the name of good people,
         free and independent,
they have full power to levy war,
                             conclude peace,
                                       and support this mutual pledge
                                                 to our sacred honor
