She said, "You're never serious."
I made a joke I shouldn’t have.
That brought things to a halt.
She said, “You’re never serious.
That is your biggest fault.”

I have to say that made me laugh.
Yeah, it gave me a smile.
‘Cause that’s the best thing that I’d heard
in such a long, long while.

If joking is my biggest fault
then I am doing great.
There are so many other things
I thought that she would hate.

So I will just control my jokes
and keep them in their place.
When she’s around I’ll keep it straight
and wear my sternest face.

But it is hard for me, for sure.
You know I am a clown.
It’s hard for me to shut my mouth
but it does help me frown.

And then she got all mad with me
and said I am no fun.
There’s just no way of pleasing her
when all is said and done.

She said I have to lighten up
and I thought I would choke.
Or maybe I should strangle her.
Hey, that was just a joke!
