Flash Fiction
James Fainted

“Don’t touch anything.” Sandy said, walking slowly into the room.

James looked around, nothing seemed odd. “Why not?” he asked, “Are you afraid I’ll mess it up?” he added teasingly.

Sandy gave him a look, then turning back, she said, “Something is wrong here...”

“Wrong how?”

“I’m not sure. Something is different from the way it was when we left for the store...”

“It looks the same to me.”

“There’s something... I just haven’t figured out what.”

“Leave it to you to sniff a mystery out of nothing.”

“That’s it!”

“What?”

“There’s a smell...”

“I don’t smell anything different...”

“Well, I do. Over here...”

Suddenly they heard a squeak from the closet.

“Was that a mouse?!” James exclaimed.

“It can’t be, Mittens would never let a mouse be in this house.”

“Well, I don’t see Mittens around... she’s probably sleeping off her breakfast. That cat has been getting a little chubby lately.”

Sandy slowly opened the closet door and peeked in. “Well, I know why we haven’t seen Mittens this morning,” she said opening the door wide. “and she isn’t sleeping either. Mittens has apparently been busy...”

There was Mittens on the closet floor, nursing three tiny kittens.

“How did this happen?!” James said.

“The same way it happens with people I think, speaking of which... I have a little news for you...”

James fainted.
