The Last Subway Ride

I awoke on this hazy subway car

Speeding faster on the tracks than it should.

I'm startled as to how I arrived here,

For I fell asleep on my bed at home.

I turned to ask another passenger,

"Excuse me, please. Do you know where we are?"

He just stared straight ahead without a blink.

Chills ran up and down, tingling my spine.

When a horrid metal scream filled the air.

The once-speeding subway came to a halt!

The car lay sideways up against the wall.

This creepy trip took on a whole new strain,

Broken down in a pitch-black subway car.

I heard a voice saying to remain calm.

We would get to where we are meant to go.

I asked quietly, "Where are we headed?"

His answer was, "Guess that depends on you."

Not quite understanding, I said, "Sorry?"

"Ma'am," he said, "I don't know how you lived life."

"Hows that determine our destination?"

"Well Madam, you're going to your judgment,

You know I'm only the ticket master."

"There must be some mistake, I'm still alive."

"No mistake, Ma'am, I assure you're quite dead."

I fell back on the seat, and couldn't speak.

I thought to myself, How well did I live?

Did I live so I have nothing to dread?

Did I ask for forgiveness while I could?

Do my family and friends know my love?

How much good did I do unto others?

Was it enough to keep me from the dark?

Did my light shine as bright for everyone?

The car righted itself back on the track,

And with a whistle, it took off so fast!

My stomach dropped to my toes, my heart raced.

I prayed that I had enough faith in life,

And believed in Him with all of my might.

The subway car was coming to a halt.

There was one last stop and no more chances.
