A poem about learning the harsh reality that to some people love is just a game.
Every time we became closer you took one step away.
I could hear myself screaming asking you to stay.
But my tears dried, my throat went hoarse.
Slowly I was moved by a different force.

Now when you come closer I put up a shield.
I take a step back to level the playing field.
You look at me all confused,
but after all this time I’m no longer amused.

This game is over, I retreat.
So be my guest and take the lead.
I will stand on the sideline waving you on,
knowing I will never again be anyone’s pawn.

You forced me to learn
when your love spreads like fire,
all you do is burn
for someone else’s desire.
