Hitchhiking to Florida Writers’ Cramp
Hitchhiking to Florida Writers’ Cramp

36

When Sam Adams
Was a young man,

He left his home.
In Mackinaw City, Michigan.
Heading for Jacksonville, Florida
Where he was to go to college.

The first stop was to check out.
The sunrise In Oscoda, Michigan.

The next day
He began his epic journey.

Being broke, foolish, and young,
He hitchhiked. along Highway 23.

It took him several weeks.
To get there.

He had a detour.
Along the country music highway
As he was a big country fan.

He stopped off.
at Pisgah National Forest
For a hike.

Ate chicken and waffles.
Along the way at the waffle shop
and roadside diners.

Slept at a rest stop in Ohio.
And here and there
Along the way.

After three weeks on the road,
Meeting many strange,
But wonderful people,

He finally made it.
Safe and sound.

Loosely based on my experiences in the mid-70s.
