Such is Life

I was tired. Working on the yard all day, with barely any lunch, knowing this was probably the last warm enough day to work. Fall was beyond behind us.

I should’ve done these jobs a month ago, and intended to, but I got the flu. I never get sick, everyone is practically mad at me for that. I go years without even a sniffle, but when I get something, it’s never small. This year right at fall clean-up time.

Today, I was almost done, but my body was fighting me, so I decided to rest for a few minutes before I tackled that last bit. I sat looking at the undone part, so I couldn’t talk myself out of it… It was just one space, relatively small. I could do it, I just needed a little rest.

As I tilted back in the lounge chair I looked up into the blue sky. Beautiful blue, save for one small cloud. As I looked up, the cloud started grabbing my attention. I kept looking away, but then being pulled back. Starting to get irritated about it, I actually yelled, at the cloud! “Go away! I’m just resting!” As if it were an annoying boss, or co-worker or something.

Suddenly the wind blew right in my face, full of dust and leaves. I had to put my hand over my eyes! When I could look again, I was actually sitting on the cloud! I could see my yard below, like looking out a window. I wasn’t even scared, and my yard looked good!

That was when Billy, the six-year-old from next door woke me. The yard did not look that good, but, better. Better enough to offer Billy some cookies, and promise the yard a better job next year. Such is life.
