Daily Flash Fiction - 1-13-23 - W/C 195

There is no noise. There is no one around. What is going on? The sun is shining, the sky is blue. But no birds sing. No people talk. No sound from machines. It’s as if I am looking at a postcard view. But it’s somehow not real. This is a fictitious view of another world.

Something is wrong here.

“What is wrong?” An ethereal voice asked a question. No person or thing came into view.

“Who asked that?” I questioned to the scene before me.

“Why do you ask what is wrong?”

Skepticism aside, I answered. “Well, to start, it’s all too perfect. Where is the chaos? Where is the noise? Where is life?”

Silence for a time.

I continued. “I’m not comfortable in a world without sound. I need sound, I need to know there are others around. People, animals. Life.”

“Are you not life?”

Now someone or something is trying to trick me. “Yes, of course. I am here. I am a person.”

“Ah, but are you? How do you know you are real?”

The words faded just as the sun faded from view and the sky grew dark. Something is wrong here.
