Lovers in a long distance relationship make plans to get together.
Let’s take a road trip.
You drive down from the north,
and I’ll drive up from the south,
and we’ll meet in the middle,
at that intersection where
missing each other
and desire come together—
so pack your car.
Bring the smile that comforts me
and the embrace I get I lost in—
and I’ll load mine:
I’ll bring the soft whispers
that tickle your ear and
the red manicured nails you love so much,
and then we’ll hit the road.
We’ll take the fast lane
and break the speed limit;
little fast cars and big box trucks
will eat our dust.
We’ll pass endless trees
on either side of the interstate
(you on 85S, me on 85N), and we’ll each
listen to the songs that remind us of the other:
(the melodic stylings of those
blue-eyed brothers of soul
that we have always loved).
We’ll call each other while we drive,
you checking to make sure I’m safe,
me chatting to keep you company.
Passion is the fuel
that transports us and
the miles melt away
until at last! We arrive at our destination:
that secreted place where
your lips touch mine
and your embrace is home.
