THE FLAG

Folded in a neat triangle
And presented to me there;
A moment when time stood still,
Almost too much to bear.

I remembered the curly hair,
The look that said "Love you, Mom"
The hand that waved a last goodbye
And the news that had to come.

Shot down in youth, lying there
Amid his friends and foe;
Why we have to go to war
Is more than I'll ever know.

So proud he was, standing tall,
In the photograph he sent
My son in uniform, smiling,
Then off to war he went.

In loving memory of those who gave their lives for their country, and of those loved ones they left behind.
