Fear felt from a child
Here in darkness, in the stillness of night,
I lay on my pillow in silence and fright.

The angry voices seem so far away,
Yet I hear the shouts and the words they say.

“I hate you, and loathe you, and wish you dead,
Get out of my life; Get out of my bed.”

The smashing of crystal, the throwing of chairs,
They’re coming closer; they’re on the stairs.

I’ll try to pretend I’m fast asleep,
But into my pillow I softly weep.

I hear the shots; I'm frozen with fear,
An eerie silence is all I can hear.

I grab for my teddy and hold him tight,
I think Mommy and Daddy left me tonight.
